Let's talk and other L&T Conversations
A study at the University of Roehampton found that academic staff valued chatting and sharing as a CPD activity; our own consultations for developing the vision for the Academic Policy Framework also highlighted the benefit of engaging in conversation. To take this further, ADEPT now offers Let’s talk, an online space for learning and teaching conversations. As a start, I have been thinking about encapsulating what a Bradford degree is about and have posted my thoughts on Let’s talk; your views are welcomed.
To get to Let’s talk, go to the ADEPT web site http://www.bradford.ac.uk/adept/ and click on L&T Conversations; you will be prompted for your Bradford username and password.

Success for two Bradford projects
Group work resource wins double national recognition
As a partner in the LearnHigher Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), the University has been developing resources to support student group-work.
The online multimedia resource ‘Making groupwork work’(http://www.learnhigher.ac.uk/learningareas/groupwork/home.htm), developed in partnership with LearnHigher colleagues from Leeds and Brunel, won two national competitions – the Epigeum Award for Most Effective Use of Video 2009 (http://www.alt.ac.uk/awards.html) and the Jorum Learning and Teaching Competition 2009 (http://www.jorum.ac.uk/community/altcCompetition.html).
Prof Peter Hartley, Director of the University’s Centre for Academic Practice, collected the awards at the Association for Learning Technology’s Annual conference in September. The Bradford staff involved in the development of the resource were Vicki Illingworth (now with Escalate) and Peter Hartley from TQEG.
Prof Hartley, is working on the further development and dissemination of the resource with Mark Dawson from the Learner Development Unit. He said: “We have already received very positive feedback from staff and tutors who have used the resource and these awards will help us to extend its use and develop it further.”
ALPS picks up prestigious award from the mobile learning industry's most famous conference
The Handheld Learning Awards for Innovation (http://www.handheldlearning2009.com/awards) were held in London on 5th October 2009during the Handheld Learning Conference. Attended by more than 1,500 international delegates, the Conference is the world’s leading event about learning assisted by mobile technologies. ALPS (Assessment & Learning in Practice Settings) (http://www.alps-cetl.ac.uk/) walked away with the ‘Best Innovation’ Award in the Tertiary, Further Education and Higher Education category.
ALPS is an ambitious, collaborative programme involving the University of Bradford and four other Yorkshire universities, 16 health and social care professions, the NHS, the Strategic Health Authority and commercial partners (ecommnet, MyKnowledgeMap and T-Mobile). Its mission is to improve the competence and confidence of graduating health and social care students by improving the standard and delivery of work based learning and assessment.
Prof Trudie Roberts, Director of ALPS said, ‘I am delighted that ALPS’ achievements have been recognised by the Handheld Learning Awards. Learning and teaching are at the centre of ALPS work and our aim is to improve the experience of students, helping them to become competent and confident professionals. Going mobile allows us to support students on placement where there is often no access to PCs or the internet, allowing them to feel connected in what can be a lonely and challenging environment. This award is a testament to the innovative work being undertaken by ALPS, and the contribution of all the people involved in the programme across five universities and 16 health and social care professions.’

21-23 December 2009
4-8 January 2010
7-9 April 2010

Upgrades and essential maintenance take place during these periods, therefore, none of the IT systems can be guaranteed although disruption will be kept to the minimum possible. Please plan assignment deadlines etc around these periods or make contingency plans for services being out of action.

HEA Free 1hr Online Seminar Series: Audio Supported Learning - May 1st 2009 14:00-15:00, British summer time. (GMT+1)
Our online seminar series continues with what we hope will be a really insightful session on the use of audio. Not just in providing feedback but also supporting self assessment and collaborative learning - not just the successes but what worked and what didn't. The seminar is being run by the engineering subject centre but the techniques apply to any discipline, indeed our presenter has worked with educators from many disciplines in building his understanding. Details below:
The use of spoken word audio can hugely improve the effectiveness of giving and receiving feedback for both student and lecturer, in all disciplines, not just in engineering. There are times when this approach will literally revolutionize this most critical academic discourse, but there are traps for the unwary and technology to tame before the benefits can be realized.
Will Stewart from the University of Bradford will introduce the work undertaken by him in partnership with Hertfordshire University and host a debate and answer questions about the practical application of audio. We expect to also hear the experiences of Bob Rotheram, manager for the 'Sounds Good' project, a pilot of audio feedback for student work at Leeds Metropolitan.

This page includes details of the event, a 6 min. vidcast to provide an introduction, preparation and initiators for the online discussion, how to sign up to the seminar, what equipment you need, technical support and what to do on the day.
Hope to meet you soon online,
